Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants by placing the roots in mineral liquid nutrients instead of soil. This may seem unusual but think about how plants make food for growth: they get it through a process called ‘photosynthesis’ – deriving glucose and oxygen from carbon-dioxide and water in the air. So, while soil does contain both water and nutrients, plants can grow just as well without it!
This infographic is the definitive guide on hydroponic plants: its long history (remember the hanging gardens of Babylon from 600 BC?), the various cultivating systems and growth mediums. Fingers itching to start?!
