In Irish folklore, there’s weird woman called a ‘banshee’. She shows herself in many forms – sometimes beautiful seductress, sometimes old hag – and the one startling feature are her eyes, always red-rimmed from crying and wailing. It’s from this wild, supernatural woman’s ghastly and uncontrollable howling that we get the term ‘wailing like a banshee’!
