The US is grappling with two situations, at opposite ends of the spectrum: at one end, there’s a major dearth of qualified nurses – despite an encouraging increase in the past 10 years. At the other end, substance abuse has become a virulent, unstoppable epidemic – the number of people who are misusing pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives run into many million, costing the economy $740 billion annually.
The crying need of the hour is trained substance nurses who will be involved in the entire continuum of care – from treatment to counseling, caring, monitoring, and educating.
