In 2002, the CIA flew an unmanned drone for the first time, for a targeted killing. However, the first unmanned aerial vehicle goes back to 1839 when Austrian soldiers attacked Venice with an explosive-filled hot air balloon. It was only 2006 that non-military use of drones commenced, with governmental projects like border surveys and disaster relief.
