STEM education has received a lot of attention in the United States over the last couple of decades, but it turns out implementing changes to curricula take time. Instructors have to be trained and put into place, which takes several years before the first students can be trained.
The first group of students to have an emphasis on STEM education starting in elementary school are just beginning to graduate from high school, so the effects of two decades of STEM emphasis have yet to become apparent within the greater economy.
