Acronyms, the short forms of long phrases, have been there since the beginning of written language. Some acronyms are so commonly used that people have forgotten the original phrase! For example, did you know that MBBS means ‘bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery’? Or that SOS was what shipwrecked people wrote to mean ‘save our souls’! New acronyms emerge with every generation, and FYI, TGIF, LOL, etc. (et cetera, Latin for ‘and so on’) are some of the new ones!
