Did you know that reading is not a natural skill? Humans are wired to speak – they hear sounds and words and learn to decipher and repeat them, but when it comes to reading, it doesn’t happen automatically. We have to first teach our brain to decode shapes and sounds, join them to create more sounds and, eventually, form sets of sounds, letters and words into sentences.
Thus, ‘decoding’ is a critical skill that should be taught first, which can then be used to develop the 4 primary building blocks of reading, as highlighted in this infographic.
