Fiction reflects life. But, as Ralph Waldo Emerson pointed out, fiction also reveals truths that reality obscures! In other words, we can sweep unpleasant facts under the carpet in real life, but fiction isn’t restricted by artificial social barriers.

This is true of many unpleasant social and human realities, including substance abuse and addiction. There are many famous fictional characters who have revealed their inner weaknesses on screen and, often, serve as a mirror for those struggling in the real world.
