Sometime in the Upper Paleolithic period (about 25,000 years ago), man discovered the skill of sewing together animal hides used ‘eye needles’ made of bone, and thread fashioned from the sinews of animals. It was only a matter of time before they figured out the technique was also useful to stitch together gaping wounds from hunting trips! And, thus, was suturing born!
From then till now, we’ve come a long way – the thread is nylon, the needle a high-tech surgical implement, and suturing is a fine skill with 11 different methods, as demonstrated in this detailed visual guide.
