Did you know that the ancestors of modern Native Americans came here around 15000 years ago? They established themselves into many tribes (562 at present count), and settled across the states, though largely towards the West, and their dwellings were designed according to the weather conditions of that zone.
So, the ‘Chickee’ built in Florida was a thatched house on stilts, to protect them from flooding and swamp waters, and the ‘Igloo’ in Alaska used snow, the freely available building material, to fashion insulated homes. This infographic explores the amazing diversity of Native American homes.
